An article in the school paper written by the president of Students for Justice in Palestine to defend the anti-Zionist stance of the the Progressive Action Coalition’s “Points of Unity” denied Jews self-determination as well as demonized and delegitimized Israel with false accusations. The article, entitled “To support Zionism is to support apartheid,” stated that “PAC opposes Zionism because it is a nationalistic political ideology which called for the establishment of a European Jewish-majority state in Palestine in which indigenous Palestinians already resided. To establish Israel in 1948 and to ensure its Jewish demographic majority, the Zionist leadership ordered the ethnic cleansing of Palestine… Even many Jews oppose the false definition of Zionism as a liberation movement. Liberation movements do not colonize, occupy and expel other peoples… Moreover, the Israeli occupation of Palestine is characterized by the routine killing and mass imprisonment of Palestinians, including children… The only intersectional thing about Zionism is that it is intersectionally oppressive.”

A petition entitled “USF Divest From Fossil Fuels, Private Prison and Companies Complicit in Human Rights Violations,” that urges the USF Foundation to divest from “companies complicit in human rights violations,” among other issues,” was being pushed for placement as a referendum on the Student Government (SG) election ballot. The petition includes companies investing “in human rights violations in Palestine and Yemen” but doesn’t name specific companies. Last spring, the SG Supreme Court ruled that an SG Senate resolution specifically discussing divestment from companies investing in Israel was unconstitutional and not within the Senate’s jurisdiction.A similar referendum made it to the ballot in 2013, which only discussed divestment from companies that were allegedly complicit in human rights violations. Legal counsel at that time had advised that the referendum was inconsistent with Florida Statutes and USF policies. This appears to be an attempt to skirt around these rulings.
