The University of Wisconsin Associated Students of Madison debated for 5 hours and then unanimously approved a watered-down divestment proposal with a 24-0-2 vote. The new proposal initially removed all references to Israel to become essentially a broad ethical investment responsibility bill. Prior to its passing, however, and after public comments were closed, language critical of Israel was then added back in. This immediately sparked anger from Jewish members of the student body, prompting two student council members to walk out from the meeting. One of the members, Rep. Ariela Rivkin, said Jewish students were left out of the resolution because they were under the impression that the body would focus on corporations, rather than Israel. At a March 29 meeting to discuss divestment, hundreds of pro-Israel Jewish students reportedly attended and the measure didn’t pass, 12-13. This time, only a handful of pro-Israel students were present, since Israel was not on the meeting agenda. Rep Rivkin exclaimed, “This is now the second time the Jewish community has been excluded. This is because [ASM] members … knew full well that there would be amendments and [the student body] did not know that — and that is undemocratic.” During the vote, the chair of the Student Council shouted “(expletive) white supremacy” after a Jewish representative spoke in support of Israel and Jewish inclusion. The Jewish representative also saw her name on a sign and felt targeted. The representative further explained, “We’re pretty horrified. This has been now a systematic excluding of our voices. This was premeditated and frankly it’s undemocratic.” Another student council member exclaimed, “It feels really premeditated to me.”

Wesleyan Students Against the Fossil Fuel Industry published an article in the school paper in support of SJP’s “Israeli Apartheid Week” that demonized and delegitimized Israel throughout the article. The article stated, “In its occupation, Israel also perpetuates an apartheid state that discriminates against Palestinians. Apartheid extends from decreased legal, political, and economic rights for Palestinians, to the denial of access to basic needs, such as land for agriculture and water. In this way, the Zionist state project may also be seen as enacting a type of climate colonialism, or the practice of organizing environmental and climate damage to happen in colonized places and to people affected by normalized colonial violence. Indeed, Israel’s climate colonialism includes the extraction and usage of coal in occupied lands; the overexploitation of water at the expense of Palestinians’ access to water for drinking and agricultural use; the taking or degradation of arable Palestinian lands; and the dumping of garbage and toxic industrial waste on Palestinian lands, contaminating both water and soil. Furthermore, the impacts of climate change exacerbate those of Israeli settler colonialism, and vice versa… In addition to eliminating Palestinians and dispossessing them of their lands, Israel enacts domination through the overexploitation and contamination of Palestinian water and lands.”

SJP has also refused to submit opinion pieces to the school paper because the student who was harassed by SJP is an editor at the paper, as their club has an anti-normalization policy that forbids them from working with or speaking to Zionists. The student victim went on to outline a number of other acts of harassment of Jewish and/or Zionists students on campus during “Israeli Apartheid Week,” that included a member of SJP attempting to publish a “satire” piece for the student newspaper’s annual joke issue that attributed fake racist quotes to the harassed student, SJP tearing down college-approved CPJA pro-Israel posters within 24 hours of them being put up (publicly and right in front of members of CPJA) and replacing them with unapproved SJP posters, taking and then throwing out cupcakes given out by CPJA with Israeli flags on them, stealing one of the chairs from CPJA’s table and yelling, “Think of this as reparations!”, accusing a Jewish student in a class who couldn’t find a paper of stealing it, exclaiming, “You people steal land,” and making an obscene gesture with a middle finger to members of a Jewish fraternity while they conducted a Holocaust remembrance event. Additionally, an Israeli student was cornered by an individual wearing a “Nazi Hunter” shirt and called a “colonialist and occupier.” Finally, the harassed Zionist student mentioned earlier was told by a friend that the friend had overhead two students asking why the harassed student was a Zionist although she was not Jewish, and one of them pointed out that one of her grandparents was Jewish and the second student joked, “That’s enough for Nuremberg!”

This flag shows the ideological underpinnings of Zionism, a settler-colonial project to lay claim to Palestinian indigenous land without acknowledging the human rights abuses, the violence, the massacres, the apartheid, and the walls that are necessary to sustain this project…We hope that throughout the rest of IAW this year you attend our events, listen to our message, and think critically about this 20 foot flag that was hung in an attempt to cover up the horrors of Zionist violence.”

The student government held an open forum on a divestment resolution that accused Israel of operating “an apartheid legal system” and called on UW-Madison to cut ties with companies such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrop Grumman, which have ties with the Israeli government. After six hours of heated debate, the University of Wisconsin Associated Students of Madison voted 13-12-1 to indefinitely postpone the divestment resolution. During the debate, one student demonized and delegitimized Israel, stating, “Our school must take a stand against apartheid, racial discrimination and genocide. Divestment is a peaceful and simple measure our campus can take…” another stated, “Israel…is an occupied apartheid state period.” A self-identified member of SJP compared Israel’s actions towards Palestinians to pogroms, claiming, “the Israeli government is not only culpable for heinous crimes and for implementing an apartheid state but I would like to argue…Israel is anti-Semitic as well as racist and discriminatory to the core…Zionism came about in the early 1900’s after waves of pogroms targeted Eastern Europe. These pogroms have striking similarities to the tactics used by the Israeli government today, including killing, destruction of homes and land confiscation. The Israeli state was founded using the same nationalistic and exclusive principles that exploited Jews in Eastern Europe. This foundation built Israel to be as oppressive as the countries that destroyed Jewish homes, lives and pushed them out of Eastern Europe. Israel in its inception is not a Jewish idea but a European one.”

More antisemitic fliers were found at the campus library for the second time in a week. One poster with the headline of “Nazism versus Zionism” contained comparison images of a concentration camp and Gaza and the words: “The largest Concentration Camp in the world today is owned and operated by Zionists. Standing up for Palestine is not anti-semitic. It is not defamatory. It does not insult anyone. It is Social Justice. #BlackLivesMatter #WeAreAllMuslim #StandWithPalestine.” Another poster said, “You are allowed to believe…We never went to the moon, the Queen is a shape shifting reptilian, and ‘the Globalists’ put chemicals in the water to make the frogs gay…But when you question the 6 million [referring to the number of Jewish deaths in the Holocaust] they put you in jail in 17 countries. Believing crazy things is not a crime. Expressing a dissenting opinion about history is not a crime either. It is a human right.” A third poster entitled “Who is Steven Salaita?…And why does the University of Illinois not want YOU to hear him? Steven Salaita was unhired from the University after Tweeting about the ongoing genocide in Palestine. He lost his tenure and his house. Chancellor Phyllis Wise met with a wealthy Jewish Donor in Chicago before the decision to dump Salaita….The University of Illinois payed $875,000 to settle the case…Maybe Jewish ‘donations’ to the University come at too high a price. Questioning the influence of the university donors is not anti-Semitic. It is not defamatory. It does not insult anyone. It is social justice.” The poster included the hashtags “#BlackLivesMatter #WeAreAllMuslim #IStandWithSteven.” The last posterm, titled “Ending White Priviledge…”, contained the text: “Privilege is the special rights and advantages that are available only to a person or group or people. If Jewish Americans make up 2% of the Jewish population…Why do they get a special Privilege when it comes to top universities?  At a Board of Regents Meeting, Fiana Arbab, the UM-Dearborn Student Government President began an unscheduled discussion over a resolution to divest from Israeli companies. She noted that the student government had “unanimously voted in favor of a resolution to divest from businesses and companies that allegedly violate Palestinian rights.” Arbab said she would be following up with a packet of information about the resolutions the assembly has passed and she encouraged the regents to promote the “principles of equality and justice.” Regent Mark Bernstein (D) thanked Arbab, and then spoke out against BDS calling it an “intellectually bankrupt, morally repugnant expression of anti-Semitism.” In response, during the Public Comments section Dearborn junior Susan Jenin defended the student government’s resolution and asked the board to reconsider forming a divestment committee to investigate investments by the University that may violate Palestinian rights. She claimed, “When we asked to end this funding of human rights violations against our families, we are told we must consider the feelings of privileged student on campus whom this would have no impact on.” She then verbally accosted Bernstein for having said he would “never divest,” stating his “personal interest” and stakes in Israel are “well-documented.” Bernstein asked what “documentation” Jinen was referring to, claiming the meeting marked the first time he had spoken publicly on the matter. Bernstein suggested it seemed the speakers had made the inference that, because he was Jewish, he was unable to view the situation objectively.

An antisemitic voicemail message was left for a librarian at the university. The message came after the librarian helped organize an exhibit on the Holocaust at a local museum. According to a transcript of the call in Huffington Post, the unidentified male caller accused the librarian of “white genocide,” called the Holocaust a “f*ck*ng lie” and said Jews “maybe better run for the exits because people are finding out you’ve been extorting money and extorting Palestine for a century” and accused Jews of running the “slave trade.” In the transcript the caller said there was “no evidence of gas chambers, no evidence of mass graves. The Nazis just wouldn’t have had the resources to dig up these mass graves, pound them into dust, and then scatter it everywhere. They were fighting a war on three fronts…It’s ridiculous…[inaudible]… you use [the Holocaust] as a club to bash white people over the head. You openly advocate for white genocide and you’re not silenced on that but any contradictions to the ‘Holohoax’ and you go apeshit. hey were fighting a war on three fronts. It’s ridiculous…[inaudible]… you use this as a club to bash white people over the head. You’re flipping your shit all over the cage and everything, screaming “anti-Semite” and “Nazi” and all this other f*ck*ng stupid shit. It’s all a f*ck*ng lie and it’s being exposed and I think maybe you guys maybe better run for the exits because people are finding out you’ve been extorting money and extorting Palestine for a century. So it’s all over. We need to get these Holocaust studies stopped because they’re f*ck*ng lies, just like Jews ran the slave trade. In reaching this conclusion, the Committee took into consideration the views of University community members, many of whom are deeply concerned about this conflict and have many different perspectives and ideas on how to address it. CISR supports the goal of a peaceful resolution that ensures the safety of both peoples and respects the dignity and human rights of all. Moreover, CISR encourages the Georgetown community to use the resources of our university – academic research, teaching and learning, co-curricular programming, and community-based service – to create dialogue, foster understanding, and explore peaceful solutions to this conflict. During the event, both CU Apartheid Divest members and the speaker, Maile Hampton, falsely accused Israel of “apartheid” and called for BDS. One CU Divest member called Israel “a colonial settlement regime.” Maile Hampton further distorted and demonized what Zionism is, stating, “people like to say when you stick up for Palestine you are being anti-Semitic but that has nothing to do with Judaism. That’s saying Zionism has anything to do with Judaism! That’s saying when people are chanting ‘death to Arabs,’ bombing others…carrying out violence acts and saying it represents Judaism that’s anti-Semitic because that’s not what Judaism is about.”

The petition includes companies investing “in human rights violations in Palestine and Yemen” but doesn’t name specific companies. Last spring, the SG Supreme Court ruled that an SG Senate resolution specifically discussing divestment from companies investing in Israel was unconstitutional and not within the Senate’s jurisdiction.A similar referendum made it to the ballot in 2013, which only discussed divestment from companies that were allegedly complicit in human rights violations. Legal counsel at that time had advised that the referendum was inconsistent with Florida Statutes and USF policies. This appears to be an attempt to skirt around these rulings.

According to an Algemeiner article, “In a video of the event posted on Facebook, MJ Oviatt — co-president of environmental justice group UIUC Beyond Coal, a sponsor of the BDS campaign — is seen describing Zionists as ‘murderers,’ accusing Israel of ‘genocide’ and mocking Jews’ claims to Israel as ‘their birthright’ as being ‘built on empty religious rhetoric.’…’This disgusting domination has never been about living on the land, and if it was, that would imply living as one with the Palestinians,’ he said.”
