  • February 26, 2016 – Claremont Colleges Consortium Jewish Students (Aiden, Orren, Stacey and Ben) – “On Dec. 13, 2015, an email from Campus Safety detailing an anti-Semitic death threat at the Claremont Colleges left us disoriented. According to the email, a student was approached at a Harvey Mudd College holiday party and told, “I can tell you are Jewish because of your nose and your hair” before the suspect declared that he wanted to “fucking kill all of you people.”  After receiving the notification, the four of us were unsure how to react and how to move forward. That day, we all spoke on the phone, attempting to locate the source of our confusion, pain, and silence. As we worked to process our own emotional reactions, we heard many students express that the administration had only reacted so swiftly to the incident because ‘Jews are white.’” Read more
  • September 2014, Jewish Claremont McKenna College Student (Bryan) “[The two hate crime incidents against me] serve as a great example for how classic anti-Semitism is being cleanly repackaged as anti-Israeli sentiment and then perpetrated under that name. It’s still the same old hatred that caused the Holocaust; it’s still out and about today. But it operates under the name of something else today.” Read more
  • September 2014, Jewish Claremont McKenna College Student (Bryan) “[Campus Safety] did not seem to give the appropriate tone and severity to responding to a hate incident.  In their report to Dean Spellman that I got to see, it was very obvious that they did not listen to anything I said. The way that they handled it was so unprofessional, that I didn’t go back.” Read more

The College Fix – ISRAELI PROFESSOR CALLS PALESTINIAN STUDENT ‘F**KING COCKROACH’
(Description note – Continued bullying of a pro-Israel faculty member: A Claremont McKenna College economics professor from Israel, Yaron Raviv, attempted to confront a demonstration by SJP at the request of a distressed student of his. A student at the demonstration told the professor, ““Oh, you are faculty? I will hunt you down!” The professor responded: “What? You will hunt me down? You’re a f**king little cockroach.” The professor has since apologized for his choice of words, but he continues to be harassed and vilified. The March 4 incident was thoroughly investigated by administrators at the Southern California college, who stated in an April 19 report summarizing their probe’s results that the professor called his comments “inappropriate and unprofessional.” The review largely cleared the professor of wrongdoing. The professor has since received several harassing emails. Pitzer (Claremont) College’s student government has called into question the “validity” of administrators’ investigation. And the student with whom the professor engaged in the verbal altercation, Pitzer (Claremont) College sophomore Najib Hamideh, plans to file a formal grievance against Raviv. Raviv told administrators the “hunt you down” comment was particularly offensive because of his Jewish heritage. Students for Justice in Palestine also filed a bias complaint against the professor, stating “the term ‘cockroach’ must be taken in its specific historical context as hateful, racist, enemy imagery. In an interview with Claremont Independent student newspaper, he said “they assumed that I meant to demean the other student as a Palestinian.” “First of all, Israelis do not use that kind of expression with respect to Palestinians–that’s a total lie. But I don’t need to use this argument because there was no way that me, or any other person, could tell that the person in front of me was Palestinian. … His English was much better than mine; he grew up here in the states. … The report of the (Campus Safety) officer describes him as a white male. … He, on the other hand, knew that I was an Israeli based on my accent when he said, ‘I will hunt you down.’  The Campus administrators’ review concluded that although the professor’s actions were inappropriate and unprofessional, they “were not sufficiently severe or pervasive as to constitute a violation of the college’s harassment policy…”)

Claremont Independent – PROFESSOR RAVIV TALKS BIAS, PITZER, AND COCKROACHES (Description note, ’ the SJP event was not in compliance with CMC’s Demonstrations Policy and the Claremont Colleges Demonstration Policy, both of which prohibit disruptive and/or non-peaceful events,” and “The CMC faculty member did not improperly interfere with or attempt to stop the event.”)
