  • December 21, 2016 – Pomona College Student (Kate) – “Shortly before the start of winter break, Claremont’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine painted a troubling and hateful mural on Walker Wall that called for the eradication of Israel. SJP’s anti-Israel mural contained a map of Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza shaded in by the Palestinian flag. This image, coupled with the words “Right to Resist” next to a raised fist, implies support for violence against Israelis and the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state.” Read more
  • February 26, 2016 – Claremont Colleges Consortium Jewish Students (Aiden, Orren, Stacey and Ben) – “On Dec. 13, 2015, an email from Campus Safety detailing an anti-Semitic death threat at the Claremont Colleges left us disoriented. According to the email, a student was approached at a Harvey Mudd College holiday party and told, “I can tell you are Jewish because of your nose and your hair” before the suspect declared that he wanted to “fucking kill all of you people.”  After receiving the notification, the four of us were unsure how to react and how to move forward. That day, we all spoke on the phone, attempting to locate the source of our confusion, pain, and silence. As we worked to process our own emotional reactions, we heard many students express that the administration had only reacted so swiftly to the incident because ‘Jews are white.’” Read more

    TARGETING JEWISH STUDENTS AND STAFF: HARASSMENT;
    DENIGRATION
    4/6/17 – A Zionist student and President of the Claremont Progressive Jewish Alliance went to SJP’s “apartheid wall” to take pictures. One SJP member took a Snapchat picture of the student at the wall and captioned it, ‘Her name is Kate ______ and she is a proud racist’ and posted the harassing message on Twitter, where it was favorited and retweeted by other members of Students for Justice in Palestine. SJP then continued their targeted harassment of the Zionist student by stealing one of her Facebook profile pictures that had a pro-Israel message and making it their intro slide in a Powerpoint presentation about imperialism, which was given publicly in a café on campus. SJP has also refused to submit opinion pieces to the school paper because the student who was harassed by SJP is an editor at the paper, as their club has an anti-normalization policy that forbids them from working with or speaking to Zionists.The student victim went on to outline a number of other acts of harassment of Jewish and/or Zionists students on campus during “Israeli Apartheid Week,” that included a member of SJP attempting to publish a “satire” piece for the student newspaper’s annual joke issue that attributed fake racist quotes to the harassed student, SJP tearing down college-approved CPJA pro-Israel posters within 24 hours of them being put up (publicly and right in front of members of CPJA) and replacing them with unapproved SJP posters, taking and then throwing out cupcakes given out by CPJA with Israeli flags on them, stealing one of the chairs from CPJA’s table and yelling, “Think of this as reparations!”, accusing a Jewish student in a class who couldn’t find a paper of stealing it, exclaiming, “You people steal land,” and making an obscene gesture with a middle finger to members of a Jewish fraternity while they conducted a Holocaust remembrance event. Additionally, an Israeli student was cornered by an individual wearing a “Nazi Hunter” shirt and called a “colonialist and occupier.” Finally, the harassed Zionist student mentioned earlier was told by a friend that the friend had overhead two students asking why the harassed student was a Zionist although she was not Jewish, and one of them pointed out that one of her grandparents was Jewish and the second student joked, “That’s enough for Nuremberg!”
    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: CONDONING TERRORISM;
    DEMONIZATION
    4/12/17 – As part of “Israeli Apartheid Week,” SJP screened the film, “The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War in the United States.” In the film, several speakers condoned terrorism against Israelis by justifying all violence against Israel, including acts of terrorism against Israeli citizens, as legitimate “resistance.” Many of the speakers demonized Israel, falsely accusing the Israeli government of “terrorism,” “murderous attacks,” and “acting like a monster,” and calling Israeli soldiers’ actions “inhumane” and “brutal.”
    DENY JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION;
    DEMONIZATION
    12/12/16 – In response to backlash from Hillel and the Claremont Progressive Jewish Alliance about a mural with antisemitic imagery that SJP had painted on campus, SJP released a statement to support the mural. The statement demonized Israel by falsely accusing the state of committing “ethnic cleansing” and “perpetuating Zionist violence” and “literal genocide.” Jewish Voice for Peace likewise released their own statement to support SJP’s mural calling for the right of return, which would effectively eliminate Israel as a Jewish state and deny Jews self-determination if put into practice.
    DENY JEWS SELF-DETERMINATION 11/29/16 – SJP painted a mural on Walker Wall in honor of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which denied Jewish self-determination by including an image of Israel overlaid with a Palestinian flag to indicate that Israel should be eliminated and replace by a Palestinian state.
    CONDONING TERRORISM;
    DEMONIZATION
    11/29/16 – Claremont SJP held the event “The Occupation of the American Mind Film Screening: IDS 2016,” at which the film “The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel’s Public Relations War on the United States” was screened. In the film, several speakers condoned terrorism against Israelis by justifying all violence against Israel, including acts of terrorism against Israeli citizens, as legitimate “resistance.” Many of the speakers demonized Israel, falsely accusing the Israeli government of “terrorism,” “murderous attacks,” and “acting like a monster,” and calling Israeli soldiers’ actions “inhumane” and “brutal.”
