– SJP EVENT –
“Refugees and the Right of Return: A Teach-In”
May 18 – May 22
– SJP EVENT –
First annual Nakba Week at UCLA
March 8
Sometime between the Feb 10 meeting and a March 5th New York Times article, the video of the meeting in which a Jewish student was openly discriminated against was taken down. The editorial board of the Daily Bruin published, “the video’s removal is still a serious breach of our student government’s promise of transparency to students.”

Response: On March 18th, in an interview with the Jewish Journal, UCLA President Gene Block says, “I think the BDS movement, whatever the intent, the effect has been corrosive. And the fact that it’s focused on a single country is isolating to many of our students. It’s divisive. And that divisiveness has created tensions that certainly weren’t here maybe a decade ago….the BDS movement does tend to isolate… it actually isolates students.”

Response: On March 10th, USAC voted 8-1-3 to make the video (of the meeting where a Jewish student was openly discriminated against) available again on YouTube.

Response: On March 10th, the undergraduate student government unanimously passed “A Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitism” which included the full US State Department’s definition of antisemitism, including demonizing or delegitimizing Isreal, and holding Israel to a double standard.

February 12
A UCLA student government candidate is challenged as a candidate for being Jewish and affiliated with Jewish organizations. The editorial board of the paper published, “The main objection to her appointment was Beyda’s affiliation with Jewish organizations..”
February 8
The University of California Student Association (UCSA), representing the student government’s of all 9 UC campuses, passes a divestment resolution 9-1-6 at a meeting held at the UCLA campus.

SJP announces plan for bringing new divestment resolution to USAC.
August 13
Anti-Semitic flyers featuring swastikas and threatening messages including “Watch out”, “Be careful”, “Wanted” and “You’ll See”, surfaced at Jewish-owned businesses near UCLA.

Response: On September 17th, AMCHA Initiative released report showing anti-Israel and antisemitic bias in three years of event programming at UCLA’s Center for Near Eastern Studies (CNES), in violation of the Center’s federal funding requirements.

August 1
Dozens of Jewish officers and members of UAW 2865 issued a statement in support of the union’s anti-Israel divestment resolution.
July 31
The Joint Council of the UC Graduate Student Union, UAW 2865, proposed a resolution to join the BDS movement.
June 26
UC Riverside former SJP president falsely accused Avi Oved, Jewish pro-Israel student nominated to be UC Student Regent, of improper campaign donations, and University of California Student Association began an investigation.
June 2
UCLA SJP issued a statement criticizing an LA City Council resolution which condemned the “Ethics Pledge” and called on the UCLA Chancellor to protect students from intimidation and harassment as a result of the pledge.
May 22
USAC President’s Office issued a statement criticizing Chancellor Block for condemning the anti-Israel “Ethics Pledge” that SJP members demanded that USAC candidates sign.
May 21
At a UCLA “World In-Sight” fair, a student group, Empowered Arab Sisterhood, disseminated maps of the Middle East that included “Palestine” but did not include Israel.
May 7
The Editorial Board of Al-Talib, the Muslim newsmagazine at UCLA, called on Avinoam Baral, Jewish pro-Israel student candidate for Internal Vice President, to publicly distance himself from the “Islamophobic” organization Hasbara Fellowships.
May 4
SJP launched a campaign demanding that students running for USAC office sign an “Ethics Pledge” promising not to go on a trip to Israel sponsored by certain pro-Israel Jewish organizations.
April 24
SJP members brought to the student judicial board formal charges against 2 USAC representative who voted against the divestment resolution, falsely accusing them of conflict of interest for going on trips to Israel sponsored by Jewish organizations.
March 13
Muslim Students Association (MSA) released a statement accusing anti-divestment attendees of the USAC divestment meeting of racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, pink washing and tokenization of other communities’ struggles, and accused UCLA Hillel, Bruins for Israel and Avi Oved (USAC Internal Vice President) of wrongly conflating anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. The statement, which demanded the passage of a Diversity Requirement at UCLA, was endorsed by 15 UCLA student organizations, 15 MSA groups from other UC and CSU campuses, 3 community organizations (Jewish Voice for Peace, American Muslims for Palestine, and Council on American-Islamic Relations), and 8 members of the USAC.
February 13
UCLA Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) authored a resolution asking the University to divest from companies that do business with Israel.

Response: On February 25th, SJP’s anti-Israel divestment resolution was debated and voted on at an 11-hour UCLA Undergraduate Students Association Council (USAC) meeting. The resolution was defeated 7-5.

May 18, 2015: Daily Bruin – Submission: SJP invites UCLA community to learn about Nakba, its consequences (Description note, “We invite the campus community to attend two events next week, hosted by Students for Justice in Palestine, for the first annual Nakba Week at UCLA. The first event, titled “Refugees and the Right of Return: A Teach-In”, will be held Tuesday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m., in Franz Hall 2258A, and will focus on the ongoing and dire refugee crisis faced by Palestinians. The second event, titled “Hear Us Speak: Stories on the Nakba and Exile”, will be held Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. in Boelter 2444, and will feature Palestinian students discussing their personal experiences related to the Nakba. In presenting these narratives of Palestinian exile, and the effects the Nakba continues to have on Palestinian identities, it is our hope that fellow students will begin to understand Palestine and Palestinians in a new light, and with this critical lens, challenge themselves to understand the lasting impact of forced expulsion and exile.”)

May 15, 2015: Daily Bruin – Aram Ghoogasian: Nakba should be acknowledged while discussing Israel (Description note, “There can be no campus dialogue if history is deliberately swept under the rug. To use Hamas, which was founded in 1987, almost 40 years after the founding of Israel and 20 years after the ongoing occupation of the West Bank began, as a counterargument to pro-Palestinian students’ criticism of the occupation is to ignore the instrumental role terrorism played in the ethnic cleansing of Palestine and the creation of Israel.”)

May 12, 2015: The Economist – Are calls to boycott Israel anti-Semitic? (Description note, “That said, calls for boycotts on some campuses have been tainted by clear expressions of anti-Jewish sentiment. At the University of California, Davis earlier this year, a successful boycott vote was followed by Muslims taunting Jewish students with chants of “allahu-akbar” and painting swastikas on a Jewish fraternity. At UCLA a Jewish student almost lost a seat on the student judicial board over concerns among fellow students that she was perhaps too “active in the Jewish community” to “maintain an unbiased view.” The BDS campaign also seems to prefer straw men to realistic positions.”)

May 4, 2015: Daily Bruin – Letter to the Editor: Criticizing country does not mean being anti-Israel (Description note – Article by Todd Presner, “But criticizing a country’s actions is not the same as being “anti” that country. Those who opposed the United States’ war with Iraq, for example, were not “anti-American.” Likewise, many proud Israelis and supporters of Israel’s right to exist have nonetheless also been critical of Israel’s occupation as inconsistent with the best of Jewish values. Even at a pro-divestment event at Princeton University last month, West stated that Jews “have a right to security after 2,000 years of vicious hatred,” and he insisted that “we must never allow one ounce … of anti-Jewish prejudice to be a part of this movement.”)

May 4, 2015: Daily Bruin – Letter to the Editor: Opposition to Cornel West’s invitation misrepresented (Description note – Article by Judea Pearl to counter Todd Presner’s article, “Finally, it is unwise to dismiss community voices as “pressure from outside groups.” These voices represent valuable experience and genuine concerns of parents, alumni and donors who have emotional investment in this campus. We should listen when friends express concerns over decisions – e.g., West’s invitation – that may cause harm to the reputation of the university, the credibility of its centers and public trust in the administration.”)

April 22, 2015: Jewish Journal – UCLA Jewish Studies head stands behind keynote invitation to Cornel West for Heschel conference (Description note, “West has also in recent months spoken out in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement “)

April 22, 2015: Jewish Journal – An open letter to Cornel West (Description note, “This is a humble request sent to you from a rank-and-file Jewish professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, where you are scheduled to deliver a keynote address in honor of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, titled “Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity.” I will be as blunt and straightforward as possible: You should excuse yourself from delivering this lecture… in light of your recent decision to become a leading propagandist for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement… we have come to equate promoters of BDS ideology with those who seek the destruction of Israel, hence the demise of the Jewish people.”)

April 22, 2015: Daily Bruin – Submission: Bigoted actions of USAC presidential candidate unacceptable (Description note, “Morris Sarafian, a current candidate for President in the upcoming USAC elections… Sarafian claimed that because of her Jewish faith, Rachel Beyda would have a “divided loyalty.” This slanderous imputation carries with it the power to dehumanize and destroy, and demands our full condemnation as a Bruin community. At endorsements, when asked how he’s fought and advocated for the needs of the UCLA Jewish community in the past, Sarafian failed to recognize his past transgression. Clearly, Sarafian does not understand the Jewish community or our struggles, when just a couple of months ago, he was at the forefront of a student government conversation that in its tenets perpetuated the ugliest form of intolerance within the history of the Jewish people. As a graduating senior, I feel absolutely compelled to speak out against Morris Sarafian’s discriminatory speech against my community, just like any other leader would do within his or her respective community.”)

April 16, 2015: Youtube – UCLA anti Semitism resolution sparks controversy over Israel criticism

April 13, 2015: Jewish Journal – The effective way to combat anti-Israel activity on campus: Public relations (Description note, “There has been an incredible growth of anti-Semitism on college campuses in North America. Too often anti-Israel sentiment is simply a veiled and more culturally appropriate form of anti-Semitism. ..This past October, swastikas were painted on the Jewish fraternity house at Emory University in Atlanta, just one day after Yom Kippur, the holiest Jewish day of the year. In May 2014, it was discovered that professors at Temple University were participating in a listserv that contained anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rhetoric, including a denial of the Holocaust. And this March, a student at UCLA was initially rejected from applying to the Student Council’s Judicial Board because she was Jewish. Much of this anti-Semitism stems from anti-Israel sentiment — or possibly vice versa; regardless, people feel emboldened these days to express anti-Israel and anti-Semitic views.”)

April 12, 2015: The Washington Post – Students for Justice in Palestine-UCLA Wall

April 12, 2015: Eagle Current – UCLA faculty overwhelmingly approves expected courses on diversity (Description note, “Other supporters stated the case for the classes was created extra compelling by quite a few current incidents on campus that raised allegations of anti-Semitism and a lack of attention to racial bias.”)

April 9, 2015: Jewish Journal – Israel trip aims to broaden minds of UCLA student leaders (Description note, “In the past, UCLA’s branch of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and its allies have come out strongly against student decision-makers accepting sanctioned trips to Israel. However, the Hillel tour hasn’t generated the same controversy as trips run in the past by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC) — perhaps in part because no currently elected student officials participated in the tour, and because there are no votes in progress on Israeli-Palestinian issues.”)

March 31, 2015: The Daily Californian – Reasons for targeting Students for Justice in Palestine

March 27, 2015: American Thinker – How to Deal with Anti-Semitism on Campus (Description note, “Rebecca is a UCLA junior who writes for UCLA’s Jewish news magazine, Ha’Am.  She decided to engage the students who put up the Israel Apartheid Wall Installation on campus…According to Rebecca, the discourse was respectful, with a give-and-take, until the Muslim representative saw her necklace that identified Rebecca as Jewish.  From that moment she never looked her in the eye and refused to continue the conversation.  Rebecca said, “I was really bothered, since she refused to talk to me only because I was Jewish.  She utterly disrespected me.  It became obvious it was not OK to have a dialogue with people who want to challenge the facts.  They do not want any dialogue.”)

March 25, 2015: Jewish Journal – UCLA donors and alumni — concerned and upset, but mostly supportive

March 24, 2015: The Huffington Post – UCLA’s “Jewish” Problem and the Rise of New Anti-Semitism (Description note, “The systematic singling out, delegitimization, demonization and setting of double standards in relation to the Jewish state has led to the systematic singling out, delegitimization, demonization and setting of double standards in relation to the Jewish people.”)

March 23, 2015: Truth Revolt – SJP At UCLA: SJP Not Anti-Semitic

March 20, 2015: LA Times – UC extends discounted tuition to military veterans (Description note, “Also on Thursday, a coalition of Jewish and education groups urged the regents to take additional steps in response to several recent campus incidents they say were anti-Semitic. The AMCHA group and others cited recent swastika graffiti on a Jewish fraternity at UC Davis and the controversy at UCLA…”)

March 18, 2015: Jewish journal – At UCLA, Zionophobia trumps anti-Semitism

March 18, 2015: Jewish journal – UCLA Chancellor Gene Block: BDS ‘isn’t going to be sustained on this campus’ (Description note – UCLA President Gene Block says, “I think the BDS movement, whatever the intent, the effect has been corrosive. And the fact that it’s focused on a single country is isolating to many of our students. It’s divisive. And that divisiveness has created tensions that certainly weren’t here maybe a decade ago….the BDS movement does tend to isolate… it actually isolates students.”)

March 17, 2015: Daily Bruin – Submission: SJP uninvolved in controversy surrounding Rachel Beyda’s appointment

March 17, 2015: Daily Bruin – Submission: USAC resolution fails to distinguish anti-Semitism, criticism of Israel (Description note, “First, the resolution dubs any speech “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, and denying Israel the right to exist” as anti-Semitic. This assumes that the only way of exercising Jewish self-determination is embodied in the state of Israel. This is clearly false: Many Jews in the past and today reject the idea that Israel embodies their collective identity and are increasingly alienated by its policies.”)

March 17, 2015: RT – UCLA and Berkeley anti-Semitism resolutions ‘blur lines,’ hurt debate – critics

March 17, 2015: Daily Bruin – Editorial: UCLA responsible for educating students on forms of discrimination

March 13, 2015: Daily Bruin – Shani Shahmoon: Resolution important in deconstructing anti-Semitic rhetoric (Description note, “”This Tuesday, “A Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitism” was presented to the Undergraduate Students Association Council to help bring an end to the discrimination of the Jewish community at UCLA. It’s no surprise, though, that this resolution quickly became politicized and questioned for its clauses regarding criticism of Israel and its government.”)

March 13, 2015: Jewish Journal – A RESOLUTION CONDEMNING ANTI-SEMITISM

March 13, 2015: Jewish Journal – Anti-Semitism at UCLA – Let’s make it a truly teachable moment (Description note – Dr. Alan Kadish, President and CEO of the Touro College and University System writes, “UCLA’s chancellor Gene D. Block denounced the board’s action and said it could be a “teachable moment,” but he didn’t go nearly far enough in making it one. He took no definitive action about the incident. The students wrote a letter of “apology” in which they expressed remorse for the “words” used but still did not recognize the egregious nature of their entire line of questioning. UCLA’s response was wholly inadequate. What UCLA should have done was abolish the Council and reconstitute it with students who embody the principles of fairness and openness to people of all groups. That would have been the way to seize the moment and truly make it teachable….UCLA has not even approached an appropriate response.”)

March 12, 2015: Jweekly – BDS on campus spilling over into something even more unsavory (Description note, “Whether or not anti-Semitism was at work in this case, it’s clear there is a growing atmosphere on college campuses that casts Jewish students in a dark light, the inevitable fallout of the poison spread by the BDS campaign. This is outrageous and dangerous. And it’s time for the college community, as well as the broader Jewish community, to speak out more forcefully against it.”)

March 12, 2015: INDY Star- Kenneth Marcus: Bigotry common on college campuses

March 12, 2015: Jewish Journal- The Back Story of the UCLA Judicial Anti-Semitic Incident (Description note, “For the past year, there has been a concerted effort at UCLA to rid the student government of anyone who might be insufficiently antagonistic toward Israel, which was seen as necessary to the passage of a BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) resolution. And as it turns out, at least three of the four anti-Beyda voters have been closely connected to that campaign. It is often said that the BDS movement is aimed only at Israel and not at Jews, but this incident shows just how easily anti-Zionism can give rise to what might be called Judeophobia – the assumption that Jews are politically suspect until proven otherwise.”)

March 11, 2015: JTA – UCLA student government passes resolution condemning anti-Semitism

March 11, 2015: Haaretz – On-campus BDS is feeding anti-Semitism: UCLA is case in point(Description note, ““Gas them, burn them and dismantle their power structure. Humanity cannot progress with the parasitic Jew.” This is not a line from a Goebbels film or Hitler’s Mein Kampf, but the University of Chicago’s Yik Yak, an anonymous, local social media app. What began with a post about Northwestern University passing a Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions motion against Israel turned into a discussion about Palestinian death tolls and those who “support slaughter of innocents on the basis that the killers have the same race/religion.” It wasn’t long before jabs were made at individual Jewish students. A social media intifada had erupted…. this incident shows how the vehemently anti-Israel sentiment on college campuses has bled into anti-Jewish sentiment… The Beyda incident – together with the comments on the UChicago forums – testifies that this assumption is fertile on college campuses.”)

Kelley states, “When you look at the demands of the boycott, they’re very simple. They’re not complicated: Ending the occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the wall, which of course the International Court of Justice said in 2004 was illegal. Second, recognize the fundamental civil and political rights of Arab citizens of Israel, that they should have full equality. It’s a myth that they do have full equality; they clearly don’t. And three, respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes. That’s UN resolution 194. That of course opens up a whole can of worms about, return where? To their property, to their land? Should reparations be paid? Of course. But to return is to remake the nation, and that’s part of the invocation of all of this”).
