ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DEMONIZATION;
DELEGITIMIZATION;
BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
3/26/17 – UC students who are members of SJP chapters within SJP West (the coalition of SJP groups on the West Coast) wrote an open letter to President Napolitano objecting to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the University of California and the Israel Innovation Authority. The letter included objections to a disregard for the “student, worker and faculty voices of dissent that have voted repeatedly to end all normalization with the Israeli state and its institutions,” and went on further to criticize Napolitano directly for “making deals with Israeli institutions that are the architects of global repression and represent all that is antithetical to public education…Democratic ideals mean nothing to you when it comes to your blinding allegiance to Israeli institutions and Zionist organizations in the US. We do not want to partner with Israeli institutions.” Finally, the letter accused Israel supporters of “[supporting] a settler-colonial project that has ethnically cleansed us from our homeland.”
BDS ACTIVITY: CALLS FOR BDS 3/6/15 – 40 professors from 6 UC campuses co-author an op-ed supporting the anti-Israel divestment resolutions on UC campuses.
BDS EVENTS 2/23/15 – Student protesters disrupted a University of California investments planning meeting, with calls to divest from Israel.
BDS VOTES 2/8/15 – The University of California system-wide Student Council debated and passed a divestment resolution 9-1-6.

(Description note, “Attendees also addressed the issues surrounding the Statement of Intolerance. This statement targeted anti-Semitism but made a correlation between taking an anti-Zionist stance as being anti-Semitic. By ensuring political criticism as equivalent to racism, it would effectively suppress pro-Palestinian activism at UC campuses. The attendees urged for a reexamination of the statement d so that it is more inclusive of other demographics and perspectives. This was controversial because Janet Napolitano, President of the UC system, has previously supported the language in this statement.”)

Rossman-Benjamin and a coalition of other Jewish and pro-Israel groups—including the Jewish Federations of North America, Hillel International, the Anti-Defamation League, the Israeli-American Council and StandWithUs—have called on the regents to endorse the report in its entirety and commended the working group for specifically condemning “anti-Zionism” and “anti-Semitism.”)

I also want to state, unequivocally, that we have and will continue to condemn anti-Semitism, although I agree with you when you state that “not all criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic.” As I’m sure you are aware, the regents of the University of California, the governing body of the system, are still discussing how or if the university will adopt a formal definition of anti-Semitism. As U.C. Berkeley’s chancellor, I must await the outcome of those discussions.”)

(Description note, “Supporters of the change claim that redefining anti-Semitism will contribute to a more positive environment throughout UC campuses. Assistant Vice President of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Daniel Juarez said that many UC campuses do not do enough to include underrepresented communities. Thus, he believes, adopting the State Department’s definition will build progress toward making the UC system more welcoming. “UC campuses across the state have continuously proven to foster a campus climate that is negative for underrepresented communities,” Juarez said. “I do think that the UC [system] needs to make sure that it is centering those communities that are least represented and most marginalized by the institution. Combating anti-blackness, transphobia, misogyny, anti-nativeness, anti-undocumented practices and discourses needs to be at the forefront.”)

The system’s Board of Regents alongside President Janet Napolitano has been attempting to adopt “new speech” to ban anti-Semitism, cordoning off criticisms of Israel and rising anti-Israel activism across campuses.”)

(Description note, “Start Date: August 3, 2015 @ 12:00 am, End Date: No Expiry.
On July 16, the California Legislature approved Senate Concurrent Resolution 35, urging the University of California to condemn all forms of anti-Semitism and racism on its campuses. The resolution uses parts of the U.S. State Department’s definition, but does not explicitly include acts demonizing or delegitimizing Israel. Its passage has reignited a debate about whether the definition of anti-Semitism should include a reference to Israel. What do you think?
• The state should have used the full U.S. State Department’s definition because Israel is important to the Jewish identity. (44%, 290 Votes)
• I don’t know how I feel about this issue. (36%, 234 Votes)
• The legislature should continue to reference a definition of anti-Semitism excluding Israel. (17%, 111 Votes)
• The California State Senate should let the University of California determine the definition’s parameters. (3%, 22 Votes)
Total Voters: 657”)

(Description note, “Today, Congressman Sherman wrote to dozens of major universities urging them to adopt the definition of anti-Semitism promulgated by the U.S. Department of State. The State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism includes, “applying double standards by requiring of it [Israel] a behavior not expected or demanded by any other democratic nation.” It also brands as anti-Semitic; “delegitimizing Israel—denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination and denying the right of Israel to exist.” Congressman Sherman is also urging the U.S. Department of Education to adopt this definition of anti-Semitism for all of its enforcement actions nationwide.”)

Jewish Journal – A letter to President Napolitano and Chancellor Gillman on ‘anti-Zionism week’
(Description note, “Anti-Zionism Week subjects Jewish students to an entire week of racist events dedicated to undermining their right to liberation and self-determination. Moreover we are extremely concerned that Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the Muslim Student Union (MSU) are selling t-shirts that say “UC Intifada” as part of this campaign. For Israeli students in particular, the word “intifada” triggers deeply traumatic memories of innocent people being brutally murdered in suicide bombings and other attacks by racist terrorist organizations. This bigoted series of events, along with SJP and MSU’s celebration of violence, creates a hostile learning environment on campus for many Jewish and Israeli students, who are minorities on all UC campuses….As such, we call on you to publicly condemn UC Irvine’s “Anti-Zionism Week” and adopt the resolutions passed at UCLA, UCSB and UC Berkeley as the official policy of the entire UC system.

This past weekend involved an incident at UC Davis where a Jewish fraternity was vandalized with anti-Semitic messages and swastikas shortly after one of the initiatives was passed. “At the end of the day when you talk about Israel in a negative light, people associate it with Judaism and attack Jews,” Elyasi said. “It’s really difficult to tiptoe around that line … sometimes Israel is singled out because it is a Jewish state and not because of its politics.”)
