BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
3/9/16 – Jewish Voice for Peace sponsored the event, “Perspectives on Israel and Palestine.” During the event, one speaker referenced a pro-Israel lobby followed by a “pro-Jewish lobby” as possible controllers for Congress and Media policies/directions. Another speaker claimed Hamas tactics are “self-defense” and Hamas has the right to “take arms against an occupier.” The same speaker later denied Jewish self-determination claiming a solution is the “removal of the Jewishness of that land” as a “reasonable option.” Finally, Israel was delegitimized with false accusations of apartheid during the event and speakers called for BDS throughout.

March 30, 2017:
The Daily Iowan – UI DIVIDED ON PALESTINIAN SPEAKER
(Description note, “Outside the Main Library Wednesday, a group of Israeli-American students protested against featured speaker Remi Kanazi because of his notable pro-Palestine poetry and spoken performances. Kanazi is also known for his line of shirts that advocates boycotting Israeli goods through the ‘Boycott, Divest, and Sanction Movement,’ — a global movement attempting to increase economic and political pressure on Israel…However, many students inside the building did not share similar feelings about Kanazi’s work…UI Students for Human Rights member Liana Suleiman said she felt great excitement about Kanazi’s visit. “There happens to be a lot of misconceptions in Palestinian-Israeli conflict, be it from statistics to personal recollections,” she said. ‘It’s very important to get all sides of the story, and Remi does a wonderful job of projecting that to a wide range of communities.’”)

March 27, 2017:
The Daily Iowan – GUEST OPINION: NO PLACE FOR REMI KANAZI
(Description note, “I am very disappointed to learn that the University of Iowa Students for Human Rights, the UI English Department, UI Student Government, and the Arab Students Association are sponsoring Remi Kanazi’s appearance on the UI campus on March 29. Kanazi’s views toward United States and Israel are abhorrent…What is particularly galling in terms of the UI Students for Human Rights involvement in bringing Kanazi to campus is his repeated distortions of Israel’s human-rights record while ignoring the situation of human rights in Palestine and other Arab territories. While a university campus should promote various points of view on important issues, the role of the Students for Human Rights (not to mention the English Department and UISG) suggest the legitimacy of Kanazi’s views. His half-truths do not deserve such an endorsement.”)
