  • March 16, 2017 – University of Missouri Jewish Student (Hannah) [about seeing a swastika] “It had its own Twitter account, but a lot of people don’t realize that a swastika is such a meaning of hate for Jewish people. When you see it on Twitter, when you see it going viral as a joke, it really instills fear into Jewish peoples’ hearts…I’m hoping to bring to light what it means to be a Jewish student right now with all the anti-Semitism that’s going on, how it heals, how it affects us, how big of a deal it truly is.” Read more

  • December 9, 2015 – University of Missouri Jewish Student (Michael) “[S]everal incidents [I] experienced while involved in activist work bordered on anti-Semitism…. In one exchange while working an information table for [my] Jewish fraternity, an Arab student accosted [me] by calling Jews “Nazis” and “kikes.” In another, [I] witnessed a prominent rabbi from St. Louis listed as a “true terrorist” at a Black Lives Matter meeting — the rabbi’s crime was sending money to Israel. It’s hard to be a Jewish student and support these groups when harsh criticism of Israel sometimes turns into criticism of the Jews…While participating in a recent social justice committee meeting, I] heard a group of African-American students defending the recent spate of Palestinian stabbings targeting Jews in Israel.” Read more

More than that, the BDS movement has brought hate, ignorance and even physical violence to other campuses…The thought of seeing my Mizzou ridden with hate like that made me feel physically ill. It all starts with one vandalized poster. It all could start here. I have just found my place here; I don’t want violence to explode from it. We can’t let the tank that is BDS into our school. HARASSMENT
    2/28/17 – Two students harassed a Jewish student with antisemitic messages that were both oral statements and written notes, as well as an incident of physical assault. The harassment had been going on since August. According to an article in the Columbia Missourian, the Jewish student “was nicknamed ‘f—ing Jew’ by his roommate and another student and was harassed by them for months after asking them to stop…[the perpetrators] were arrested after posting anti-Semitic quotes in the room the victim shared…including on the ceiling [above the Jewish student’s bed]…in addition [the non-roommate perpetrator] is accused of throwing a water bottle from a vehicle at the [Jewish student’s] head as he was walking on a sidewalk on campus. The bottle hit the [Jewish student’s] head, and [the perpetrator] shouted a slur from the car window.”

    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: HISTORICAL;
    DENY JEWS SELF DETERMINATION;
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION
    4/26/16 – The Peace Studies Department and Mid-Missourians for Justice in Palestine cosponsored the screening of the anti-Israel film, “The Zionist Story.” MU professor George Smith introduced the film, and called for the replacement of Israel as a Jewish state. The film itself falsely accused Israel of ethnic cleansing and apartheid, villified Zionists and painted Zionism as evil and racist. The film also accused Jews of using the Holocaust for personal gain and referenced historical tropes of Jewish power/control by stating, “The Holocaust allows Zionists to manipulate world public opinion and stifle open discussion. It is their biggest asset.”
    HISTORICAL;
    COMPARING JEWS TO NAZIS;
    DEMONIZATION
    11/9/15 – Canadian-Israeli journalist David Sheen spoke about racism and homophobia in Israel. In his talk, Sheen employed several antisemitic tropes: Sheen falsely accused Israel of being a racist state whose leadership aspired towards a “theocracy” whose goal is to ignite a “race war” through violent means, including by “burning babies,” firebombing, stabbing attacks and other acts of brutality towards Arabs, black Africans and LGBTQ individuals; he demonized sacred Jewish texts, including the Torah, Talmud, and Tanya, accusing them of being deeply racist and calling for the brutal murder of non-Jews and homosexuals; and he compared “racist” Jews who believe that Jews should not intermarry to Nazis, calling efforts to prevent intermarriage “a eugenics program.” Sheen’s talk was sponsored by MU Peace Studies program, MU Women’s and Gender Studies, Mid-Missourians for Justice in Palestine and the Islamic Center of Central Missouri.

    (Description note, “A review of 7,400 pages of university correspondence sent last fall during the crisis on campus — obtained exclusively by Heat Street and National Review — shows that the university downplayed allegations of anti-Semitism on campus, even as it vocally responded to incidents reportedly targeting black and other minority students….University officials remained silent about the vandalism at the Jewish fraternity and the feces swastika for several days, and even when the incident became public, they were divided about how to respond to the two new possible incidents last fall, emails show. Chancellor Loftin wrote to his colleagues on Nov. 2 that he wanted to issue a statement, just as he had done in response to racial slurs targeted at members of the Legion of Black Collegians earlier in October. His draft statement included a reference to how “our campus experienced another instance of racism and hate, this time directed at our Jewish students,” adding that the university “did not immediately react to this latest incident in order to give law enforcement time to investigate and possibly identify the perpetrator(s).” But five other key university officials, including some in the marketing and communications department, as well as the chief diversity officer, quickly advised Loftin against issuing a statement.”)

    The Algemeiner – University of Missouri Sponsors Antisemitism
    (Description note, “Since 2014, the Peace Studies Department (PSD) at the University of Missouri (MU) has hosted four very disturbing events, one every semester. Just last week, for example, PSD teamed with a community group called “Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation” (MMFR) to cosponsor the screening of the viciously anti-Israel film, “The Zionist Story.” The people who introduced the film explicitly called for the replacement of Israel as a Jewish state with a bi-national state, which everyone knows means an Arab-majority state. According to the widely publicized US State Department definition of antisemitism, of course, calling for the destruction of Israel qualifies as antisemitic.”)

    (Description note, “Salama Gallimore, the lead investigator in the university’s Title IX office, responded to Cohn’s e-mail and suggested that the student involved in that particular incident may well have been responsible for the poop swastika in the bathroom. “The accused student in the above incident has also been reported to have made anti-semitic remarks to the members of a Jewish fraternity,” Gallimore wrote. “It is possible that the aforementioned student may be responsible for the swastika vandalism as he is a resident of Gateway. Since the student has allegedly engaged in acts of racism and anti-semitism, I feel that it is important to consider that the swastika drawn in fecal matter (even if it was not drawn by the student under investigation) was meant to offend and threaten a larger population of our campus community in addition to Jewish students.”)

    November 11, 2015:
    St. Louis Jewish Light – Jewish students react to hate on Mizzou campus
    (Description note, “The swastika was not the only anti-Semitic incident recently. In April, a Mizzou freshman drew a swastika and other hate speech in the stairwell of a dormitory. The student pleaded guilty in October to a reduced charge of second-degree property damage and told the Mizzou police that he was inspired by YouTube videos and “acted in the spur of the moment,” according to the Columbia Tribune.  In June, the school also cancelled a proposed class, “Perspectives on Zionism,” taught by a professor of biological sciences, George Smith, because of a lack of enrollment. But when the class was announced, Jewish groups started a campaign urging the school to cancel the class because they said Smith had an anti-Israel bias and sought to have the Jewish State destroyed. “)
