  • March 3, 2017 – University of Washington Jewish Student (Jessica) “At the University of Washington just two weeks ago, Nazi recruitment posters were plastered around campus. That same week, a friend of mine was told, “Ashkenazi Jews are not real Jews,” the intent being that the white skin we inherited with our Eastern European descent disqualifies Ashkenazi Jews from our Judaism, history, and “otherness.” However, Eastern European Jews were the victims of the worst form of racism and ethnic cleansing the world has ever seen only 75 years ago. Entire branches of my family tree were pruned and burned by Nazi Germany. To the perpetrators of racism who grow louder each day around the country and on our campus, my religion, not skin color, makes me a target. However, to others, the fact that I’m white-passing precludes me from being a victim of racism.” Read more
  • February 20, 2017 – University of Washington Jewish Student (Jessica) “Someone in a green hoodie and black backpack came past us and tore down our Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine Pro-Peace poster and ran away, We have been tabling all week to promote dialogue, negotiations, and cooperation as the best path toward a peaceful solution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict. This man did not stop to talk to us and ask us what we were doing or what we believed in. He just came behind us, said “F*** you guys” and tore down our sign. Someone ran after the guy and brought back our sign.” Read more
  • February 20, 2017 – University of Washington Jewish Student (Uri) “the pro-Palestinian group, with their offensive borderline antisemitic display, arrived after we did. They saw where we were located, which was far enough from their original location, but decided to bring their ‘wall’ about 20 meters away from us and then complained that we were too close. We were there to promote dialogue, we didn’t protest their presence or have any issues. If anything, we welcomed the chance to show people both sides and confront them with the facts. I can’t see a person in the right mind who won’t at least understand that things are not really black and white. Unfortunately the other group didn’t feel the same. After setting up unreasonably close to us, they complained to the university that our display is offensive and ‘triggers’ them.  Our display was all about peace and coexistence, that the anti-Israel group found it offensive is a real self-indictment against them. [After refusing to remove their pro-Israel display when confronted by the UW Student Activities Office citing dozens of complaints by SUPER-UW members, the Jewish students cited free speech and the UW Student Activities Office backed down] The complaints were just because we are Jews that promote peace and oppose discrimination and hating narratives. We were not going to be silenced by racists, especially when our message is coexistence, peace, facts, and chocolates.” Read more
  • Nov 24, 2014, Jewish University of Washington Student (Nathan) “I’ve attended the UW for four years now, I’ll be graduating at the end of this quarter, and during my time here I’ve faced more anti-Semitism than I’d like to admit. I’ve had TAs whose grading of my work drastically changed for the worse mid-quarter after I spoke out about the need for a Jewish State. I’ve gotten dirty looks around campus for displaying my Star of David prominently around my neck. I’ve had classmates quite literally cease interaction with me after discovering my Jewish heritage, no longer sitting near me during lectures and going out of their way to be in different groups during quiz sections.” Read more
  • Nov 24, 2014, Jewish University of Washington Student (Nathan) “…oftentimes, when people on campus see my Star of David or find out that I’m Jewish, I’ve become the target for their frustration and anger with the State of Israel’s actions. Many will never admit it, but simply by being Jewish, I’ve become their enemy…some people see my Star of David and brand me as someone toxic, someone worthy of their disdain and vitriol.” Read more

    TARGETING JEWISH STUDENTS AND STAFF: GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
    HISTORICAL
    2/17/17 – Neo-Nazi fliers with swastikas promoting the AtomWaffen Division were found in several spots on campus. One of the posters said, “Look out! The Nazis have come to town!” and another said, “Where will you be when the race war begins? When the world burns? Join your local Nazis. Congregating near you.”
    DESTRUCTION OF JEWISH PROPERTY;
    HARASSMENT
    2/17/17 – A pro-Israel education display promoting peace that was set up by the Coalition of Husky Allies for Israel (CHAI-UW) was vandalized when an individual with a hoodie on ran up to the display, yelled “F*** you guys” at the Jewish students, ripped the poster and then ran off. The vandalism occurred the same week that an attempt to have the display removed from campus failed.
    SUPPRESSION OF SPEECH/MOVEMENT/ASSEMBLY;
    HARASSMENT
    2/13/17 – SUPER-UW unsuccessfully tried to have a pro-Israel education display promoting peace that was set up by the Coalition of Husky Allies for Israel (CHAI-UW) removed from campus. SUPER-UW members complained repeatedly that the pro-Israel display was “too close to SUPER-UW’s display,” despite being set up prior to SUPER-UW’s display, as well as that the pro-Israel display was offensive and “triggers” them. A representative of the UW Student Activities Office arrived and told the Jewish students to pack up and move, stating that they had been inundated with dozens of complaints by SUPER-UW and allies. The Jewish students refused citing, free speech and spreading a message of co-existence. The Office of Student Activities then backed down.
    HARASSMENT;
    HISTORICAL
    1/17/17 – Two neo-Nazi recruitment fliers were found by a student outside of Raitt Hall, who voiced concerns to a professor in class about them. The professor then advised students to go and check out the posters. Upon seeing the signs, students tore the posters down. The professor who had advised students to go check out the posters wrote about his experience on Facebook and was subsequently harassed, receiving threatening Facebook messages, e-mails, and phone calls as part of a campaign of online harassment, apparently by Neo-Nazis who were upset that the posters were torn down. His cell-phone number, which was publicly available online, was posted on the Daily Stormer, a well-known Neo-Nazi website.
    GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
    HISTORICAL
    1/13/17 – A swastika was painted on the building of The Wesley Club, a LGBTQ-affirming campus ministry. Date of incident is approximated from the article.
    HARASSMENT;
    HISTORICAL
    6/30/16 – Neo-Nazi hate messages were chalked on UW’s campus targeting Jews with the words “Stop the (((Bankers))).” The triple parentheses are an antisemitic symbol used to identify and target Jews for harassment.
    GENOCIDAL EXPRESSION;
    HARASSMENT;
    HISTORICAL
    5/31/16 – Burned pages from a book by a famous nineteenth-century German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine, who wrote in his 1820-1821 play Almansor the famous line, “Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people” were scattered outside the University of Washington’s Hillel building. The burning of Jewish books is reminiscent of Jewish books burned during the Inquisition and Holocaust.
    ANTISEMITIC EXPRESSION: DEMONIZATION 5/15/17 – SUPER UW put up placard displays on campus in commemoration of the “Nakba.” One of the placards said, “Nakba. The ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine.”
    HISTORICAL;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    2/16/17 – A student found an antisemitic flier in front of Magnuson Health Sciences Building that said “WE MUST BOYCOTT (((KOSHER TAXATION))). Avoid food brands with these labels [shows all Kosher symbols]. Should 98% of the population pay tribute to an overrepresented, elitist (((2%))) ?”
    DELEGITIMIZATION 2/13/17 – SUPER held the eventIsraeli Apartheid 101 Lecture” as part of Palestine Awareness Week to “introduce us to the idea of Israeli Apartheid.”
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    2/13/17 – SUPER erected a mock “apartheid wall” in honor of Palestine Awareness Week. Painted at the top in large letters were the words “Israeli Apartheid Wall” with explanatory text stating: “This wall represents the Israeli Apartheid wall built by Israel in order to restrict the movement of Palestinians from the West Bank and separate them from their land and families.” Lettering at the bottom of the middle panel said: “THIS IS APARTHEID.” Another panel asked, “What is BDS?” with explanatory text calling for BDS and noting the University’s refusal to comply. At the bottom were large letters spelling, “TO EXIST IS TO RESIST.”
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    2/6/17 – An article in the school paper focused on the upcoming Palestine Awareness Week, previously known as Israeli Apartheid Week. The article covered a delegitimizing SUPER UW event, “Israeli Apartheid 101,” and quoted from SUPER leaders who called for BDS and falsely “likened the segregation of Israelis and Palestinians by Israeli government to the past apartheid in South Africa.”
    DEMONIZATION 5/16/16 – A SUPER UW Nakba event on campus contained a sign saying, “Nakba, the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine.” Another sign read “Stolen Land” and a third sign said, “Until the British left [May 15, 1948] no Jewish settlement, however remote, was entered or seized by Arabs, while [Jewish forces] captured many Arab positions…” Taken all together, the signs demonize both Israel and Jews.
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    5/11/16 – SUPER UW participated in a “Decolonize UW” protest event on campus and held signs calling for divestment, one of which falsely accused Israel of apartheid stating, “#DivestfromIsraeliApartheid.”
    DELEGITIMIZATION 4/21/16 – In honor of “Israeli Apartheid Week,” SUPER UW held the event, “Israeli Apartheid Week: Palestine Cultural Festival.” The discussion on the event’s Facebook page stated that there will be a Dabke dance performance to celebrate, “cultural resistance to apartheid!”

    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
    4/18/16 – SUPER UW held a panel entitled, “Racism, State Repression, and Empire: Palestine and International Solidarity” as part of “Israeli Apartheid Week.” During the panel, remarks by panelists falsely accused Israel of apartheid including that the, “Israeli working class benefits from the exploitation and colonization of the apartheid.” Panelists also called for BDS.
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (CALLS FOR BDS)
    4/15/16 – An article in the school newspaper falsely accused Israel of apartheid stating that “Israeli Apartheid Week” aimed to, “raise awareness about Israel’s apartheid policies over the Palestinian people and build support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.”
    DENYING JEWS SELF DETERMINATION;
    DEMONIZATION;
    DELEGITIMIZATION;
    BDS ACTIVITY (BDS EVENT)
    3/2/16 – In an eventsponsored by Super UW, Remi Kenazi performed his poem, “Normalize This!,” in which he falsely accused Zionism of “infecting the mind of millions with racism,” and Israel of being a “settler colonial state with appropriated culture…a racist, exclusivist, supremacist state” that was guilty of “apartheid, ethnic cleansing,” and he promoted the elimination of the Jewish state. Additional poems were read, which, according to an article in the school paper, entailed calling for divestment.
    DEMONIZATION 5/13/15 – SUPER UW organized a “die in” at Red Square on campus to commemorate the 1948 exodus, after learning that a pro-Israel event was going to take place there the same day.

In his talk, Salaita demonized Israel, falsely accusing it of barbarity, brutality and depravity, and of perpetrating war crimes and mass slaughter, especially with regard to children, whom Salaita said were “blown to smithereens” and whose corpses were stuffed into ice cream freezers, and he delegitimized Israel by falsely accusing it of settler colonialism. Salaita also stated that he opposed Zionism and the notion of a Jewish state, and he falsely accused Zionists of making “phony claims of antisemitism” to mask Israel’s war crimes and shut down all criticism of Israel. In addition, Salaita touted his role as a founder of the US Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and a promoter of the academic boycott at the American Studies Association meeting at which the boycott was endorsed. Salaita’s talk was co-sponsored by American Indian Studies; American Ethnic Studies; Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies; History; the Simpson Center for the Humanities; the Henry M. Sprawled out around the center of Red Square, around 50 individuals laid in silence holding signs with the names of lost Palestinian villages. The silent protest lasted 15 minutes, followed by a speech by freshman Amani Azzaidani, which caught the attention of on-lookers during the busy passing period. The die-in was organized by group of pro-Palestinian members of the UW and greater Seattle community, including SUPER UW, a student-run Palestinian activist organization. The group had been planning a week of events to commemorate the Nakba on campus and had arranged the die-in after learning that a pro-Israeli celebration was to take place on Red Square on Monday.”)

    April 2, 2015: The Mike Report – UW STUDENTS CONDEMN SALAITA APPEARANCE (Description note – An open letter to the University of Washington community from UW Student Jamie Schwartz and the UW Chapter of  Students Supporting Israel,“His [Salaita] statement and intentions are perfectly clear—the existence of the State of Israel has made hating Jews, not only acceptable but, to use his word, “honorable”. Since when is discrimination of any form something to be proud of? This begs the question, why is our University sponsoring a talk that is supposed to contribute to our culture of academic integrity, accuracy, and legitimacy from someone who outwardly misrepresents facts, delegitimizes peoples, and encourages hatred? Where is the line between encouraging freedom of speech and abetting an individual who preaches grotesquely inappropriate language in the public sphere? Is this the kind of educator the university should invite to speak? Steven Salaita is not an exemplary educator. By associating with him, the university not only relinquishes its academic integrity, but also condones a man who honors bigotry.”)
