Response to UCI Chancellor Gillman Statement

Response to UC Irvine Chancellor Gillman Regarding His Statement Outlining Intentions Towards Implementation of “All Elements” of the Regents Statement

August 16, 2016

Dear Chancellor Gillman,

Our 36 Jewish and civil rights organizations representing hundreds of thousands of members nationwide, many of them in the UC community, thank you for your recent statement to the campus community outlining the actions that the university will take to “ensure the full implementation of all elements of the Regents’ statement.” These actions are constructive, and we commend you for your leadership as the first UC chancellor to take pro-active steps towards implementing the Regents’ important statement.

As you know, the UC Regents’ statement was a response to a serious and growing problem of anti-Semitism on many UC campuses. The statement acknowledged that “opposition to Zionism often is expressed in ways that are not simply statements of disagreement over politics and policy, but also assertions of prejudice and intolerance toward Jewish people and culture,” and further asserted that anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic anti-Zionism are forms of discrimination that “have no place at the University of California.”

We look forward to hearing in mid-October further details about how UC Irvine will make educating the campus community about anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic forms of anti-Zionism a priority, consistent with the Regents’ statement, and we stand ready to help.

Sincerely,
